Wastewater and Waste Programme “Clean Mali” – Mali Sanya
Context
Municipal sanitation and waste management services remain poorly developed in Mali with the access rate in rural areas being at just 20% and in urban areas 53%. Problems concern the increasing pollution of surface and ground water, and the lack of sanitation facilities. In the waste sector, there is no adequate waste management to cope with the increasing volume of waste, leading to much of it not being collected or being disposed illegally in the open countryside. In addition, household waste is burned in the open, resulting often in smouldering fires and the emissions of toxic gases that also affect the health of the Malian population. At the few official landfills that exist, mostly women (98%) sort the waste and sell the recovered recyclables at low prices yet having little opportunities for formal employment.
Project description
The programme “Mali Sanya” (Clean Mali) aims at the sustainable development of peri-urban centres and small towns in terms of drinking water supply and sanitation and waste management (circular economy). The project is implemented by GIZ, with the focus on improving sanitation and strengthening the circular economy and the objective of sustainably improving sanitation and recycling for 40% of residents in the provincial centres of municipalities involved in the project. This makes a decisive contribution to the protection of water resources.
Within the GIZ project, AMBERO Consulting is responsible for the support of selected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups in Mali in leveraging sorted waste through planning and implementing at least 5 innovative business models in the circular economy and by doing so closing gaps in the circular economy and promoting employment. A particular focus is the promotion of job opportunities for young entrepreneurs and women in Mali.
