Vocational Training Partnership Project in Iraq
Context
Currently in Kurdistan many young people lack economic perspectives and have difficulty to enter the labor market or generate income. A home-grown industry is still very weak, with most goods being imported, while the government relied heavily on the income from oil sales. There are a number of vocational training centers in the region, but they suffer from lack of funds as well as lack of modern know-how and equipment.
In the current political and national crisis in Iraq, with Kurdistan involved in a war with the Islamic State and hosting an increasing number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees from the Syrian war, the large number of people stuck in refugee camps around the country has become an additional problem. They, too, need to be provided with training or income opportunities.
In this situation, the new project will contribute to improve training and employment opportunities with experience, knowledge and proven strategies.
Project description
The Vocational Training Partnership Project in Northern Iraq is the follow up of a GIZ-project (SEDI) which was implemented by AMBERO between 2014 and 2016. After the GIZ project ended, an evaluation led by bfz was conducted and resulted in the suggestion of this follow-up phase.
The project objective is to offer improved and consistent basic vocational education and training to young people, in order to increase the demand for technical occupations and offer graduates a market-driven qualification.
This objective is to be achieved by four project results: Mobilization and Selection, Vocational Training Courses, Employment and the Improvement of the Private Sector.
To meet the expected results a labour market study was conducted to identify occupations according to demand and supply. Trainers for the conduction of the respective courses will be trained and certified. After the vocational training, the young adults will receive further training in starting their own businesses. Monitoring the success of the alumni is part of the objective. In addition to the training the consortium supports the dialogue between the responsible ministries and the local private sector.
