Enhancing the Capacities of Municipalities and Local Community promoting Community Participation, Lebanon – SANAD
Context
In relation to the total number of its citizens, Lebanon has taken in more refugees than any other country in the world. An estimated 1.5 million people from Syria have fled to Lebanon in a bid to escape the civil war raging in their own country (at the end of March 2022, around 840,000 Syrians were officially registered with the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR). The sheer number of refugees coming into the country is a huge challenge for the roughly 4.4 million inhabitants of Lebanon – where there are already about 256,000 Palestinian refugees, some of whom have been living in camps there for decades.
Project description
The Enhancing the Capacities of Municipalities and Local Community promoting Community Participation – SANAD project seeks to improve peaceful coexistence between Syrian refugees and the host community in 4 municipalities in North Lebanon and Akkar. In a participatory approach, the local needs for peaceful coexistence and improvement of living conditions are identified. Initiatives addressing these needs are then implemented during the project. From a policy perspective, the project is aligned with two crucial frameworks: The Lebanon Crisis Response Plan (LCRP) and the Lebanon Reform, Recovery and Reconstruction Framework (3 RF). Social inclusion and social stability represent key pillars in both documents.
