Emerging lessons for mainstreaming Ecosystem-based Adaptation

Emerging lessons for mainstreaming Ecosystem-based Adaptation

On behalf of GIZ, AMBERO Consulting GmbH conducted an entry point analysis for mainstreaming the EbA approach into policy planning and decision-making. Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) is a nature-based solution to adapt to changing climatic conditions that is gaining significant importance in the context of global conventions, such as the Paris Agreement of the UNFCCC or the Aichi targets agreed in the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

By assessing five country case studies (Mexico, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, Viet Nam) our team of seven international experts analysed carefully, when windows of opportunities for mainstreaming EbA open up in national, local, communal and private sector planning and decision-making processes.

Among the most promising approaches are mainstreamed natural infrastructure in Peru’s public budget allocation process, the establishment of a coral reef insurance in Mexico, the public-private ecological infrastructure partnership in KwaZulu Natal/South Africa or the design of the Strategic Environmental Assessment for planning processes in the Philippines. The study’s summary report as well as all country case studies are available here.

We thank our study leader Dr. Thora Amend as well as our experts Dr. Lili Ilieva (Peru), Alejandra Calzada Vasquez (Mexico), Tony Knowles (South Africa), Emma Ruth Ramos (Philippines), Hoang Thi Ngoc Ha (Viet Nam) for their excellent work and contributions.
