Sustainable Land Management Program – Subcomponent Participatory Forest Management

Sustainable Land Management Program – Subcomponent Participatory Forest Management

Climate, Environment and Biodiversity

Client:

GIZ

Period:

2009-2012

Country:

Ethiopia

Project Description

Within the last decade, Ethiopia’s forest cover has been reduced from 40% to 2.4% due to a strong demand for forest resources from a growing population and inappropriate forms of use.

Through regulated access to forest resources, the pressure of forests should be reduced and the permitted use will be made profitable. The sale of forest products and the controlled use of the forest should sustainably safeguard livelihoods and contribute to food security.

Goals

The German contribution to the national Sustainable Land Management Program aims at reducing land degradation and improving food security in the mountain areas of Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia.

As part of the subcomponent Participatory Forest Management (PFM), AMBERO provides support to the Oromia Forest Agency in further developing and harmonizing the already tested PFM-approach, identifies and implements income-generating activities and develops the regulatory framework for Sustainable Land Management in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia.
